St Teresa Peace and Social Justice Ministry

The Peace & Social Justice (PSJ) Ministry at St. Teresa of Avila has a dual mission of education and advocacy. Our goal is to deepen the parish community’s understanding of social justice issues in order to motivate and activate the community to take action, advocate for justice, and make a difference in our world.

Welcome the Stranger Ministry

St. Teresa of Avila parishioners have been working with Exodus World Services to support refugee families in coalition with other Lincoln Park/Old Town parishes. Together we support a refugee family coming to the United States by collectively buying and delivering a Welcome Pack and groceries for their arrival. You can also volunteer as a New Neighbor: helping in many ways, from tutoring English, to assisting the family with navigating public transportation, to simply being an American friend.

Loaves and Fishes

Our Loaves and Fishes Ministry at St. Teresa serves the needs of our community by preparing and serving hot, nutritionally-balanced meals every Friday for the elderly, homeless and others in need in our community. We provide a welcoming environment and treat our guests with dignity, respect and courtesy while serving between 60-80 meals a week. We also partner with local restaurants to occasionally provide our meals. In addition to the meal, our guests also receive a water, dessert, snacks, fruit and some weeks a sack lunch prepared by local grade school students.

St Teresa of Avila Food Pantry

Our parish food pantry is a welcoming, dependable source of nutritious food, respect and social contact to the food insecure of our community. Most of the food is supplied from the from the Greater Chicago Food Depository (GCFD). However, we do supplement with donations from parishioners and purchase needed items. You have helped us in the past or plan on helping us with Saturday Food Pantry Distributions, including set-up, distributing to our guests, and clean up after the distribution, from 9AM to 12PM.

Group Formation

St Teresa Bible Education Classes

All are invited to join us for bible education classes that are a NON-INTIMIDATING, EXPLANATORY, DEVOTIONAL, and HISTORICAL discovery of the bible. Participants will learn to embrace the bible not as something to master, but as a place to encounter the Living Word of God. All materials are provided by the parish at no cost to the participant. All classes meet at St. Teresa of Avila facilities. All classes vary in length and break for holidays & summer. Direct any questions via email to dbichimer@gmail.com. Register on the website.

Group Life Stage

St Teresa Women's Spiritual Reflection Group

We generally meet on the last Tuesday of the month from September through May, from 7:30 to 9:00 PM. We meet in Avila Place, 1930 N. Kenmore. Women’s Spiritual Reflection Group gathers women of the St. Teresa of Avila community providing a supportive, quiet, sacred space for prayer and reflection. Gatherings may include presentations, cultural experiences, journaling and creative prayer – all focused on deepening our faith and connecting our spiritual and lived experience.
