About Most Sacred Heart Parish
Eureka, Missouri
The history of Most Sacred Heart Parish traces back to the Christian Brothers at La Salle Institute in Glencoe, whose chaplain served the Catholics of the Eureka area. The parish was formally founded in 1889, and in 1897 a little white frame church was built on Central Avenue. In 1947 the Franciscan Province of the Sacred Heart took over priestly leadership of the parish, which bought the Claffey estate just outside of town; the parish school opened on September 6, 1948, and the cornerstone for a new church, classrooms and gymnasium was laid in May 1950. The parish has since expanded its facilities with new classrooms and the Pope John Paul II Library.
